Taiwan's Digital Camera Sales Nearly Double in Second Quarter of 2010 2010/07/23: Altek Leads Growth with 124 Percent Jump in Sales as Taiwan Industry Revenue Gains by 84 Percent

Taiwan 's digital camera industry, which accounts for nearly half of the world's production, had sales that nearly doubled during the second quarter this year after global demand rebounded.

Taiwan industry sales soared by 84 percent to NT$24.9 billion (US$774 million) from the same period a year earlier, according to monthly revenue reports the companies file to the Taiwan stock exchange authorities.

Altek, Taiwan 's second-largest digital camera maker, led industry growth with a 124 percent gain to NT$7.4 billion in sales. Ability Enterprise Co., Taiwan 's largest digital camera maker, saw revenue jump by 84 percent. Worldwide sales of digital cameras rose by 121 percent during the first five months this year, according to the most recent information from the Camera & Imaging Products Association based in Japan .

"Thanks to the economic recovery and new customer orders, Altek has achieved significant growth in this first half year," Altek said in a July 6 statement. "We expect to see the traditional hot season demand further drive sales momentum in the third quarter."

Altek is Taiwan 's only digital camera maker with the ability to design key components such as controller chips and software that enhance the photos its cameras take. The company counts large brand-name vendors in the U.S. and Japan as its customers.

In June, Altek launched the Leo, the world's first 3.5G camera smartphone. Operated with a touchscreen panel, the Leo features a 3x optical zoom and 14 megapixel resolution. The three-in-one product works as a digital camera, a digital camcorder and a mobile phone.

In addition to Altek , Taiwan has other companies that sell digital cameras under their brands, such as BenQ Corp. BenQ's latest digital cameras offer 12 megapixel resolution, touchscreen operation, and high density movie recording. BenQ sells everything from computers to mobile phones and consumer electronics.

Taiwan 's digital camera makers account for about 40 percent of the world's production. Other major Taiwanese companies in the digital camera business include Ability Enterprise Co., Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Asia Optical Co. and Largan Precision.

Taiwan has won a reputation as one of the world's leading producers of high-quality electronic goods. Taiwanese companies make nearly three quarters of the world's personal computers and about half of the world's liquid crystal displays.

In recent years, many of these companies have emerged from contract manufacturing to build their own brands.

To promote Taiwan's industry, the government has made the development of branding a key task to boost the competitiveness of the local economy. There are two goals of the Branding Taiwan program, which was started in January 2006. The first aim of the Branding Taiwan program is to integrate resources conducive to the establishment of brands. The second aim is to assist Taiwan companies with brand development and increase the value of Taiwan's international brands.
