Taiwan Light-Emitting Diode Sales Rise 73 Percent in Second Quarter of 2010 2010/07/26: New TVs with Energy-Saving LED Backlights Key Demand Driver; Continued Growth Expected, According to Market Research Firm

Taiwan, which has the world's second-largest light-emitting diode (LED) industry, saw sales surge by 73 percent during the second quarter this year, and one of the key demand drivers has been TVs that use the energy-efficient lights, according to a market research firm.

The Taiwan LED industry's second-quarter sales increased to NT$21 billion (US$653.8 million) from NT$12.2 billion in the same period a year earlier, based on monthly revenue reports that listed companies post to the Taiwan stock exchange authorities.

The global market for LEDs, worth about US$6 billion, is likely to grow to US$10 billion by 2012 as nations and consumers use the energy-saving lights to cut expenses and help reduce carbon emissions. LEDs have the potential to replace incandescent and fluorescent lighting sources in electronic displays, road signage, traffic lights, large public information screens and televisions. LEDs contain no mercury, unlike fluorescent lights, and last longer.

"At present, overall demand for LEDs is optimistic," market research firm LED Inside said in a July 14 report. Demand for LEDs in TV backlights remains strong, LED Inside said in the report.

The penetration rate for LED backlights in flat-screen TVs is expected to grow to 40% in 2013 and surpass fluorescent backlights by 2014, market research firm DisplaySearch said in a July 2009 report. By 2012, all notebook PCs will have LED backlights, the U.S. market researcher said.

Taiwan supplies about 25 percent of the world LED market. Taiwan 's LED makers include Arima Optoelectronics Corp., Bright LED Electronics Corp., Epistar Corp., Everlight Electronic Co., Formosa Epitaxy, Genesis Photonics Inc., Harvatek, I-Chiun Precision, Ligitek, Opto Tech and Unity Opto Technology Co.

The high-tech lights have other advantages because they take up less space, have no breakable glass or filaments, perform exceptionally well in cold environments, require no warm up time, eliminate frequent replacement of burned out bulbs and tubes and emit no harmful infrared or ultraviolet rays.

LEDs reduce energy consumption by emitting light from a chip rather than an incandescent filament in a light bulb or charged gases in a fluorescent light tube. LEDs use about a tenth of the energy of an incandescent bulb and can last a decade or longer. They also produce almost no heat, thereby reducing fire potential.

Taiwan companies are among the world's leaders in offering products that save energy, reduce pollution and help keep people healthy. Taiwan has some of the world's largest companies making green products such as bicycles, LEDs and solar cells to name a few. The Taiwan government is supporting this effort as part of its goal of sustainable development for businesses.

Researchers say new manufacturing technology may help make LEDs a viable lighting source in homes and offices within the next five years.

LEDs are poised to take a larger portion of the multi-billion dollar lighting market away from light bulbs and tubes as the new technology becomes more mature and manufacturing costs fall.

The U.S. Department of Energy said that potential energy savings from current LED street lighting is significant, and that potential is likely to increase in the future as the energy and lighting performance of LED street lights continues to improve.
